Nintendo Switch 2

Screen reader
editNintendo's built-in screen reader is called Text to Speech.
- Press the home button.
- Go to the bottom row. You will know when you have reached the bottom and can go no further when you here a thunk sound that sounds different from the other menu navigation sounds.
- Hold the right joystick or right cursor until you reach the end of the menu, then move over one option to the left. You will know you have reached the very right side when the click sounds stop. Be sure to hold the right joystick or cursor, as the menu raps back around to the left side if you press the right joystick or cursor once.
- Press the A button to enter the System Settings. You will know when you enter the system settings by the sound it makes, (it sounds like a ratchet turning, or several loud, distinctive clicking sounds in quick succession, if you are unsure what a ratchet is).
- Hold up until you have reached the top of the settings window. You can also press up multiple times to reach the top, as this menu does not rap around.
- Go down 6 times, then press A to enter the Accessibility Settings.
- Hold up until you have reached the top.
- Go down 8 times, then press A to enable Text to Speech.
Verbosity and Usage Hints
editAs you navigate the console, the screen reader will explain interface elements, such as lists. It will also tell you if the list is vertical or horizontal, and if there are any adjacent lists that can be navigated to.[2] It will also explain if a download is in progress for a game, and it will tell you if other actions can be performed, such as accessing the options menu with the plus button.[3] If you have not downloaded enough games to fill all the game slots on the home screen, it will announce when you move past an empty slot by saying, "Invalid button."[4] If you adjust the volume of the console, the screen reader will announce the change at a higher pitch on the left side of your headphones or speakers.[5]
